    Check With Your Employer

Sometimes employers will play a role in your continuing education. They may encourage you to attend workshops occasionally and some may even require a certain amount of continuing education be completed each year by their employees. It is important to check with your employer to see if they do either of these. If they do, you can coordinate with your employer about which ones might be most beneficial for you to attend and when an optimal time to attend would be. If you are changing jobs or just getting into the industry, you should ask about this during interviews.

    Why Are Ce Providers Regulated

Nationwide, massage therapy is a popular career choiceand an area thats growing. However, since massage therapists may operate independently, and since massage itself is so diverse, the massage industry has struggled with creating uniformity in massage therapist regulation. This includes the areas of training, education and licensureall of which will help ensure the credibility of the field as a whole.

Regarding continuing education, the NCBTMB has moved to the forefront of the charge in trying to create some basic guidelines for massage practitioners and massage instructors to follow. As such, they started to evaluate both what should be required of massage therapists as they advance in their careers, along with what CE providers should have to offer their students.

In 2011, after facing criticism that they had not been stringent enough with their standards in evaluating massage education providers, they determined to redesign their approval criteria. As of 2013, they now have an upgraded continuing education provider evaluation process.

If youd like to become a continuing education provider or instructor, its a good idea to visit the NCBTMB website to get a baseline understanding of what they look for in an approved provider. While their benchmark is not law, it does suggest that at minimum, youll need:

Some prior teaching experience with a small group A class description and objectives A syllabus outlining coursework

What is trauma & how can it show up in massage clients? How can a massage therapist create increased safety for clients and students with a history of trauma? What are some concrete techniques that can be used to help ground and stabilize a client whose trauma has become activated through massage? We will look at a variety of different types of trauma including traditionally understood traumas like sexual assault, medical traumas, or a history of abuse, as well as traumas caused by race, gender, and inequality.

It is crucial for massage therapists to have an in-depth knowledge in the practices and policies needed to create safety and containment for your massage clients. Our training will give you a greater understanding of trauma that will enable you to both avoid trauma triggers and know how to manage them with safety and respect towards the client when a technique invokes a traumatic response.

    Why Is Continuing Education Important

Continuing education is important for many reasons. One of these reasons is that there are so many techniques and styles of massage and not every technique is appropriate for every client. Also, new things are being discovered and developed all the time so there will always be something new to learn. Keeping up to date with industry changes is a key ingredient to being a great massage therapist. As a matter of fact, the average professional massage therapist takes 22 hours of continuing education a year. Additionally, if you have board certification or a similar designation, continuing education is required to maintain that credential.

Massage Therapy Continuing Education: Online Or In Person

Given Oregons continuing education requirements for massage license renewal, all active massage therapists must regularly add to their professional knowledge. As a leading massage therapy school in Oregon, East West College offers continuing massage therapist schooling for alumni and non-alumni alike. Our continuing education courses are offered in person, on our NE Portland campus. However, many Oregon LMTs complete their CE hours through online courses. Today were comparing the advantages of in-person vs. online courses for massage therapy continuing education.

Advantages of In-Person Continuing Education for Massage Therapy

Support and Accountability. When facing a room full of fellow learners, people are naturally motivated to do their best. In contrast, learning online may make it difficult to stay invested. As Rhodes scholar Adam D. Chandler recalled of his online mathematics studies, I felt alone and unsupported. I had no one to impress or disappoint. I struggled to stay motivated. A face-to-face meeting in a classroom imposes accountability, inspires effort and promotes academic responsibility.

Hands-on practice. For continuing education massage classes, its helpful to have the master there at your side, giving you feedback and maximizing your take-home learning. After all, there is no way for online professors to tell you if your application of that new massage technique is correct.
