Romo also points out that giving massages is hard work, particularly on a therapists joints. “It takes a lot out of you,” she says.
And that labor-intensive work may do wonders for you. “When you walk away from that massage, thats going to serve you for two to three weeks in your job, your home life your social life,” says Patricia Rossi, a business etiquette coach based in the Tampa Bay, Florida, area. “It will make you feel better and be a better human.”

The national average annual wage of an massage therapist is $47,180, according to the latest data from the BLS. This is around $6,000 less than current average annual salary for all occupations, $53,490. As with most occupations, the average massage therapist salary can vary significantly depending on the state where youre employed. In the best-paying state for massage therapists, their average annual wage is $77,080, much higher than the average for all occupations nationally.

States Where Massage Therapists Earn The Least Money
Massage therapist salaries are not so great in many states of the South and Midwest. In the worst-paying state for massage therapists, Louisiana, the average salary was less than $30,000. While cost of living is certainly cheaper in Louisiana when compared to the national average, its average massage therapy income of $28,790 is still very low. However, salaries for massage therapists werent always so low in Louisiana. Five years ago, the mean annual wage for a massage therapist in the state was $37,550 before falling by 23.3% by 2019. Heres a look at the bottom-10 states for massage therapist salaries:
Louisianas decline in wages is the worst out of all states analyzed. Rhode Island was a distant second, experiencing a 10.4% decline in massage therapy salaries from 2014 to 2019, followed by Alaska, Maryland and Iowa. By contrast, the average massage therapy salary in Nebraska soared by 66.5%, from only $31,420 in 2014, up to $52,320 in 2019.

The app is alright, but lacks a lot of the functionality that I would have hoped for. Specifically, this is an app that most people are going to make use of after they join Massage Envy as a customer. So, I would presume that booking an appointment is of primary interest. However, the problem with the app is that it walks you through what service and the options youd like to only tell you whats available at the very end. Then, if youd like to try a different location, you need to walk through the same process selecting the service and options youd like. Also, if you are a paying member, it doesnt seem to recognize your lower / free rate. Id think that if there was an option to select multiple locations or locations within a specified range, that would be extremely useful for most clients, but by that same token, itd also show clients that theres actually very little availability for services at peak times.That said, the app does help you make an appointment as long as YOU are flexible with your time, which is exactly the reason that it doesnt work well for me. I have to plan a few days to a week before my appointment to get the time Id like, but, so often, that changes with my work and family schedule. Please do better Massage Envy.

How Much Massage Franchises Know About The Therapists They Hire
Detailed background screenings, reference checks, and a review to ensure state licensing and certification requirements are met are part of the required hiring process for massage therapists by all franchisees, said Massage Envys spokesperson. Therapists are also required to go through updated background screenings every year.
The spokesperson also noted that Massage Envy uses an automated system to monitor therapists records in real time. If theres a problem, the system alerts the franchisee and the therapist in question is removed from the schedule until the issue is resolved, the spokesperson said.
That system is operated by Universal Background Screening this company is also used by Massage Heights, said ODonnell, to do background checks on employees.
In addition to standard background checks, she said, this company may also handle reference checks for Massage Heights franchisees, and perform checks for aliases potential employees may be using.

Hours Of Education Franchises Require Of Therapists
All Massage Envy therapists must meet state licensing and certification requirements, said the companys spokesperson.
However, because licensing and certification requirements vary from state to state and because a license or certificate may be voluntary or not required in some states, all massage therapists are required to have a certificate demonstrating that they have completed a minimum of 500 hours of massage therapy education from an educational institution approved by their state, the spokesperson added.
Massage Heights also uses states requirements as a basis for its own.
As long as have an active license with no previous infractions against the license that would come into question, and theyve kept up with their CEUs, then thats at least a starting point, ODonnell said.
