Getting Your Massage Therapist License

How To Become A Massage Therapist Online -Work From Home

Before you can begin your career, you will need to pass an approved licensing exam. You must check with your state’s licensing board to make sure that you are taking the right exam before you schedule a test date or pay an exam fee. The MBLEx is the most widely used licensing exam and currently accepted in 43 states so if you aren’t sure where you want to work yet, this might be the best choice. The BCETMB is also accepted by many states. These are the two most widely-used exams.

Whichever exam you end up taking, you will see questions covering much of what you learned in your massage therapy program. However, since programs can vary significantly, it is important to spend a few weeks preparing by using a study guide designed for that specific exam. This will provide a comprehensive overview of everything you will be tested on, including any material that might not have been included in your training.

You will definitely want to review what you learned during your in-class coursework, including:

  • Anatomy and physiology

  • Massage therapy ethics, laws and regulations

  • Client assessments and treatment planning

  • Professional guidelines

  • Pathology, areas of caution, contraindications and special populations

While there will be some questions on technique, licensing exams tend to focus on the knowledge and theory side of massage therapy more than the methods.

    Getting Licensed And Certified

  • 1Research your jurisdiction’s licensing requirements. Before you start training, it’s a good idea to make sure that you understand how to satisfy your jurisdiction’s licensing requirements so you’ll know what kind of training will qualify you to be licensed.
  • In the U.S. most states have some form of licensing, so check with your state’s licensing board to get more information.XResearch source Keep in mind that even if your state does not have licensing requirements, your city or county may.
  • Some jurisdictions require licensing for some types of massage but not for others.
  • 2Find a suitable training program. There are plenty of massage schools out there. You may have seen their ads or even received advertising materials for some of them. Keep in mind that these schools are businesses that are trying to make money, so be sure to check out all their claims carefully. Look for a program that leads to certification and which satisfies your jurisdiction’s licensing requirements, which may include accreditation.XResearch source
  • Most massage schools teach basic Swedish massage and allow you to choose other specialties in addition to that. Look for a school that caters to any specialties you are most interested in.
  • You can research schools online, or you can ask massage therapists what schools they went to and what they thought of their experiences.
  • How Much Will It Cost

This question should encompass not only tuition, fees, and supplies but also all the other expenses that will be involved in attending. For example, how will you get to school? And what will the expenses be related to that travel?

In addition, you should be aware of possible hidden expenses in some massage programs. Inquire about the cost of tutoring, meeting with faculty members outside of class time, and other resources that you may need in order to be successful in the program.

Incorporate financial concerns into your search early on. The best place to start is with a schools financial aid specialists. Be sure to also research both school-sponsored scholarships and external scholarships.

Finally, heres an important caveat as you research massage therapy schools: Dont simply look for the lowest cost. Remember that the value you gain from attending a given program will depend a lot on how well it prepares you to be a successful professional.
