In a word, yes. Here are some of the main methods to give yours a major kick up the backside:

Dr.Ingrid Eysn, who practises at the VIVAMAYR Health Resort, explains that exercise has a positive effect on the bodys system as a whole, and it also stimulates the lymphatic system a lack of movement can lead to blockages in the lymph. It doesnt much matter what kind of exercise you opt for any movement helps the lymph to speed up.

  • Reducing negative emotions
  • Eysn adds that stress or emotional blockages can also be reflected in the flow of the lymph. Morellato agrees: controlling stress levels is very important, because when were stressed, we increase the inflammatory process, which overloads the lymphatic system.

Sadly, theres no one-size-fits-all advice here, but if you are carrying a mental burden, its not beyond the realm of possibility that itll be affecting your lymphs, too. I find upping my yoga sessions and seeing a psychotherapist really helpful when I cant quite manage my stress by myself.

  • Breathing exercises

There are also things that you should do following the lymphatic massage. Lymphatic massage expert Flavia Lanini told Vogue it’s important to stay hydrated for the next 48 hours, so drink plenty of water. Lanini also said “avoiding alcohol, sugar, gluten, and sodium” during that period is a good idea, but that there is “no need to obsess.”

Staying hydrated even after that 48 hour period could help overall. Healthline says that hydration is key for anyone who has lymphedema or lymphatic drainage issues, as hydration helps move waste along the body until the body releases it.

You can also use some type of compression sleeve or hose between massages to help contain fluid buildup. Dr. Raakhee Patel also told Healthline that lymphatic drainage massages should be used for maintenance between professional appointments. “This is a maintenance technique,” he said. “Your lymphedema should not get worse if you regularly practice lymphatic massage.”

How To Do It Yourself The Home Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic drainage is a massage method that helps shift surplus fluid in your body via your lymph vessels. The aim is to enhance circulation by focusing on areas where fluid accumulates, causing lumps or pockets in your muscles. And this can be beneficial for persons experiencing swelling from medical disorders such as lymphedema and cellulite.

The massage uses continuous rhythmic pressure to move fluid through the lymphatic system and back into your bloodstream, where it may be filtered out of your body. It acts almost like an internal shower for your skin, flushing away all the pollutants.

What Exactly Does The Lymphatic System Do

The lymphatic system is the skins natural purification system. It consists of fragile transparent vessels that rhythmically contract to pump fluid and waste away from the skin, explains Professor Dr. Michael Detmar, Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at IRÄYE.

The waste hes referring to includes bacteria, dead cells, foreign matter, fat, and various other waste products and, if theyre left to hang around for ages, its not good news: think an inability to lose weight, feeling puffy, hormonal imbalances, compromised immunity, and being more prone to asthma, allergies, and breakouts, according to Morellato.

Another symptom of having a poorly-functioning lymph? Premature ageing, which Detmar explains is down to the constant low-level inflammation that breaks down collagen and elastin, compromising the integrity of the skin.

The retroperitoneal or lumbar lymph nodes are usually located around the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava and form three distinct groups: left lumbar , right lumbar , and intermediate lymph nodes. See the article : What is a lymphatic drainage massage good for?. The latter group lies between the two large abdominal vessels.

Can lymph nodes be felt in the abdomen? Lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin are close to the surface of the skin and are easy to see and feel. Others that are deep in the chest or abdomen are not felt from the outside. They can only be found on a scan. They can cause pain as they swell and press on tissues in your body.

Why A Lymphatic Drainage Massage Might Be Different Than You Think

When most people think of a lymphatic drainage massage, they think of the affected swollen area and often believe the massage will be performed focused 100% where the most lymphatic fluid has built up. However, the lymphatic system is a whole-body system, and that is why a lymphatic drainage massage is practically a whole-body process.

Nearly the whole lymphatic system drains by the left shoulder. The exceptions are the head, the right side of the chest, and the right arm, according to Healthline. Lymphedema therapists often start at the collar bone making half-circular motions to open up the system. That is called clearing and the first stage of lymphatic therapy. The second stage is called reabsorption.

During clearing, the massage will help create space where there is fluid buildup. Space encourages the fluid to circulate again. Reabsorption is how it sounds making motions on different parts of the body so the lymphatic fluid is reabsorbed into the larger lymphatic system, according to Massage & Fitness Magazine.

What Is A Lymphatic Drainage Massage Used For

Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage, is a gentle form of massage used to relieve painful swelling in your arms and legs caused by lymphedema. Lymphedema often affects people recovering from breast cancer surgery.

Lymphedema happens when your tissues retain fluid left behind after your cardiovascular system sends blood to your tissues and organs.

The remaining fluid is called lymph. Normally, your lymphatic system collects your lymph and returns it to your heart via a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes. When something disrupts your lymphatic system’s process, lymph collects in your arms and legs, making them swell.

A massage therapist uses lymphatic drainage massage techniques to move lymph from your tissues to your lymph nodes, which eases the swelling in your tissues.

    After Your Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Post-massage, make sure you keep your body hydrated with plenty of water, and try to reduce sugar and salt intake. These can impact the effects of your lymphatic drainage massage. Repeat the process two to three times per week, or whenever you start to feel slightly sluggish. Before long, you should start to see the invigorating results of your massage.

How To Perform A Lymphatic Massage

    Self Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Trained professionals provide lymphatic massage, but they can teach an individual basic drainage techniques to use at home. A doctor or other professional can advise on safe ways to drain lymphatic fluid.

People can perform most of these exercises either standing, sitting, or lying down, as long as they are comfortable.

Keep the following tips in mind during a lymphatic massage:

    • These massage movements should affect only the skin, so use gentle pressure and do not press hard enough to feel the muscles.
    • Keep the hands relaxed.
    • Do not massage swollen or infected areas.
    • Do not massage areas of the body that have undergone treatment for cancer.
    • Drink extra fluids, ideally 24 glasses of water, after each massage to help flush the body.
    • During the massage, there should be no pain or skin reddening.
    • Do not use lotions or other products, only the hands.

What Is A Lymphatic Drainage Facial Massage

As the name suggests, lymphatic drainage is the process of “draining” fluid from your lymph nodes using massage techniques. This gentle massage targets the lymph nodes and drains away toxins, encouraging your lymphatic system to deliver fresh nutrients to your cells. The result is a more sculpted jawline, depuffed face, and glowing complexion that can help with improved firmness, lack of sallowness, and plumpness over time.

Do Lymphatic Drainage Massages Actually Improve Your Health

The thinking is that a “clogged” lymphatic system equals all sorts of health problemsand that can be true. Cells depend on lymphatic fluid to transport substances, communicate with other cells, and help them carry out their duties.

So a damaged network can screw up those processes, contributing to issues such as lymphedema, chronic swelling in a specific area of the body, says Koehler. “In the medical field, we use manual lymph drainage to help people who have had damage to their lymphatic system following surgery, trauma, or developmental disorders,” she says. “In this case, manual lymph drainage can be beneficial because there are specific techniques to assist with moving lymphatic fluid out of the damaged areas to other areas in the body that are functioning normally.”

Try adding quick cold-water rinses to your shower to boost lymphatic flow.

But how do you know if your lymphatic system is backed up in the first place? Here’s what to look for.

As Koehler explains, most of the time, impaired or plugged-up lymphatic vessels are the result of surgery, infection, trauma, or diseases, such as cancer or autoimmune disorders. Read: So a broken system *does* matter, but if there was a problem with yours, youd know it.

  • Using firm pressure, massage in a circular motion for about 5-10 seconds.
  • Work tender points for several extra seconds.
  • Move onto the next point and repeat until all the lymphatic points are massaged. If you have a lot of tender points, please see note below.
  • It seems like a lot of points, but it really only takes 2 or 3 minutes to get them all done! And you can give yourself this self lymphatic massage while youre watching TV, while youre on your lunch break.heck, even while your at a red light.

Important Note: Do not massage a bruise or an injury. If you find that you have a lot of tender points, your body may be overwhelmed with toxins, so dont massage them all at one time. If your body has too many accumulated toxins, massaging all the tender points may make you feel flu-like as the toxins are being unclogged and released. If thats the case, just proceed slowly and massage a few points at a time.

The soreness may not go away immediately, but you are indeed helping clear the congestion . Over time if you keep massaging these points daily, youll notice that the tenderness will go away, which is just what we want! That means youve successfully cleared the blockage and made a huge step at helping your lymphatic system run more smoothly! Woohoo!
