How To Become a Licensed Massage Therapist/ Schooling, Licensure and Continuing Education

That year and during 2021, CE providers carried on with their pivot to online courses, especially as state boards of massage suspended in-person CE requirements. Now, in 2022, massage therapists and educators alike are eager to get back to in-person technique education.

Yet, the past two years have provided the opportunity for CE providers to hone their online offerings, and many educators and therapists have embraced the opportunity to offer a hybrid model of education than this field has ever seen. Whats become clear, say providers, is in-person and online education can, for many modalities, not only coexist but work effectively in tandem better than ever however, some portions of massage education require in-person learning.

I am very much looking forward to in-person education in 2022, said Pucka, who practices in Lafayette, Indiana, and who plans on attending three in-person CE weekends this year. I just dont get the same results from as I do when I attend in-person education. Life at home and work does not allow me to focus. Reading or watching a screen for hours is not my thing. When I practice a technique I dont really know if I am doing it right or not. I get up from my chair and I feel drained.

Vision And Upper Body Tension

Vision issues are very common for our clients and for bodyworkers as well. Vision issues are frequently related to chronic face and upper body tension, which even very good bodywork relieves for only a short time. For example, squinting or straining to see can create deep tension in the eyes, jaw and suboccipitals. Head tilts and turns can develop with conditions such as a lazy eye. Working at a computer while wearing bifocals can lead to a downward tilt of the head and a retraction of the neck, making the eyes, head and neck continually tight.

This class will help you understand when a vision issue is contributing to client’s chronic upper body tension. Some additional issues related to vision include: strains related to poor posture and overuse of the eyes overuse of computers, cell phones, or other near-point work emotional stress and longstanding vision conditions. You will learn: how to spot some of these causes a treatment that includes bodywork and hydrotherapy methods to create a spa for the eyes and to identify compensatory reactions of our body to vision issues and wearing eyeglasses.

The topic of muscle tension and how it can be related to the eyes was very unique and appealing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a class like this offered. – Patricia Evenson

“One big takeaway was that the skeleton follows the eyes. Now that I have that awareness, I notice this in my body in all that I do. – Wendy Edwards

While weve acknowledged that Continuing Education Units are important for massage therapists, were still missing an important part of the overall picture. If a professional were to take just some course offered online or in-person, would it actually count towards their annual requirements? And what exactly are those requirements? The answer is simple. In the United States, in order to ensure that the massage CEU course you take will actually count towards your annual requirement of CEUs, youll want to make sure that your course is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork . The NCBTMB offers a great F.A.Q. about their continuing education providers. While its incredibly comprehensive, its also a bit lengthy: so, well summarize all of the important bits for you here . Meanwhile, if youd like to learn more about the NCBTMB, its history, and why its important for practitioners in the United States, Panda Massage CEU has compiled a comprehensive blog post on the subject here .

Once youve taken a look at the AMTAs state database and determined how many CEU hours you need annually , you might still be wondering: how do I ensure that whatever course I attend will actually qualify to fulfill those requirements?

Thats where online courses come in. Read on to learn more.

Introduction To Visceral And Abdominal Massage

The viscera are at the very core of our body, and are, along with our nervous system, a primary source of life. They are at the center of our structure, our emotions, our biochemistry, and our life energy. There are over 500 million neurons in the belly , and our enteric nervous system is a primary source of our intuition and “gut” feelings.

When we are anxious or distressed, our natural instinct is to protect our soft underbelly and “stuff” emotions there, causing multilayered problems throughout the body. The smooth muscles of the gut contract, pulling on the surrounding mesentery and fascia, causing not only gut pain, but back pain. In addition, surgery can create adhesions and multi-directional disruptions in the abdominal fascia and musculature. It is ironic that this vital healing area is often overlooked in massage.

The sensitivity and vulnerability of the belly is precisely why it is so receptive to safe, calming, and nourishing touch. We can soothe the enteric nervous system and the soft underbelly, sending waves of deep relaxation throughout the entire body. We can relax the smooth muscles of the intestines, which reduces pain, improves digestive function, and eases the fascial pull in the back and other areas of the body. We can sometimes separate post-surgical adhesions, creating balance and increased ease of movement at the very core of the body.

What is trauma & how can it show up in massage clients? How can a massage therapist create increased safety for clients and students with a history of trauma? What are some concrete techniques that can be used to help ground and stabilize a client whose trauma has become activated through massage? We will look at a variety of different types of trauma including traditionally understood traumas like sexual assault, medical traumas, or a history of abuse, as well as traumas caused by race, gender, and inequality.

It is crucial for massage therapists to have an in-depth knowledge in the practices and policies needed to create safety and containment for your massage clients. Our training will give you a greater understanding of trauma that will enable you to both avoid trauma triggers and know how to manage them with safety and respect towards the client when a technique invokes a traumatic response.

Ethics Supervision Boundaries And State Law

The class will begin with a thorough review of state massage law, and some interesting, important, and occasionally upsetting changes to the law. We will also cover the Washington State massage laws that went into effect on September 1st, 2021.

After a review of professional ethics, roles, and boundaries, we will take a more personal approach to professional ethics. Ethics is a living subject and is best learned in a live, interactive format. As massage practitioners, we work closely and intimately with our clients, but we often experience isolation and burnout in our own practices. When ethical conflicts, confusions, and challenges inevitably arise, we often feel that we have no place to take them.

In this peer supervision class, we will explore your current professional issues and dilemmas, whether they be interpersonal, ethical, financial, COVID-related, or other. This is not a hypothetical or ‘you should eat your vegetables’ approach to ethics, but rather an opportunity to draw support and gain insight from your peers and mentors as you deal with whatever your real ethical issues or conflicts are. The class size will be quite small and intimate, with two instructors and a maximum of ten students. You will return to your practice refreshed and with a deeper sense of clarity.

Because of the currently recommended social distancing precautions, this class will be held on Zoom.

The Neuroendocrine System Stress And Massage

In order to improve the quality of their bodywork, most massage therapists focus on learning new techniques to add to their tool belts. But paradoxically, the most important element in successful massage outcomes might not be WHAT techniques you do, but HOW you do them, and WHO you are when you’re doing them. In other words, the kind of relatedness you establish with your clients, and your own internal state as you engage with them, may be the most important influencers on the quality and outcome of your work, as well as your clients’ overall massage experience. As one psychotherapist said, Good therapy is 80% who you are and 20% what you do.

Humans engage in something called ‘limbic resonance’, where the internal state of one can deeply influence the internal state of the other, and vice versa. This can happen very rapidly, and often subliminally. To say it another way, others feel and respond to our inner states, and we in turn respond to theirs. We can actually regulate the internal state of another, and they can help regulate us. This is a fundamental and necessary part of human experience, and a huge benefit of massage, whether our clients know it or not.

“One of the best non-technique classes I’ve attended in years. I would recommend it to any therapist looking for information related to our field.” – BJ Erkan

“The subject and the way the material was explained was challenging but not overwhelming. Bottom line, a sweet spot class.” -Barbara Falorni
