Lymphatic Drainage Massage Rochester Ny

What Is Manual Lymph Drainage

New lymphatic drainage massage workout in NYC // Body Roll*r by Stretch*d

This is a question that many young women in Rochester, NY have been facing more and more, and the question is yes there is treatment after plastic surgery. That treatment consists of wearing compression garments for 3-6 months, drainage tubes being removed, stitches being removed, multiple creams, pain pills, and manual lymph drainage. Treatment changes from doctor to doctor, and country to country.

Many women of Rochester, NY, from the ages of 20-50, have been going overseas to the Dominic Republic and Columbia to get plastic surgery of all kinds, the Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, has been a very popular augmentation. Many young women have turned to liposuction, tummy tucks, breast implants, breast lifts, breast reductions, muscle sculpting and the BBL to get the perfect shape that every woman wants.

Yes, plastic surgery has been around for years. Women and men have gone in for minor to major surgeries for as long as I can remember, but I have seen an increase in the last couple of years of in my profession as a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. I started my career working with breast cancer patients doing manual lymph drainage on women and men who ended up developing lymphedema due to their cancer treatments. But I have noticed a shift in my career as more and more women have traveled to the DR, or Columbia, have been being advised by their plastic surgeons to get Manual Lymph Drainage, or Lymphatic Drainage massage and scar tissue release.

What Happens During A Lymph Drainage Massage

Talk to your doctor before getting a lymphatic drainage massage, and make sure you’re receiving treatment from a trained professional. The massage therapist will follow a particular sequence, using a series of massage techniques, including stretching, compressing, gliding, and cupping motions.â

Light rhythmic movements stimulate the lymphatic system without pressing hard on the vessel. They make the lymph fluid move easily through the nodes and tissues, making sure the fluid doesn’t get trapped anywhere.

What Is A Traditional Thai Massage

Traditional Thai massage is a different experience if youve only ever had a Swedish or deep tissue massage. In Thai massage, you wear loose-fitting clothing and start by lying on a mat. Throughout the massage, the therapist moves your body into various seated and prone positions, which stretch and release your muscles and soft tissue. Although your body is moving, the therapist is doing all the work, making it feel similar to supported yoga. The massage therapist will bend, stretch, and compress and lengthen your body using their hands, forearms, elbows and even feet. Dont be alarmed by the feet! Many studios have overhead supports that allow the practitioners to safely walk on your back, releasing tight adhesions and promoting ease. Thai massage can be both invigorating and relaxing. It is an excellent option for keeping your muscles in good health if you regularly work out, or if you want to overcome a lack of flexibility. Studies show that Thai massage can increase blood circulation, improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension and enhance mental well-being.

What Are The Different Swedish Massage Techniques

There are five main techniques in Swedish massage: effleurage, friction, petrissage, tapotement and vibration. Within each category there are various movements, all intended to ease muscle tension and pain. Each movement has a specific purpose for loosening, warming, soothing or stimulating your muscles during your massage. Here is a breakdown of each of the five Swedish massage techniques:

  • Effleurage: Sweeping, gliding, smooth long strokes done with the hands or forearms. These strokes can loosen and warm the body and are said to help stimulate blood flow.
  • Friction: These circular or transverse rubbing strokes are also warming and can get deeper into the muscle tissue. They should be avoided on injured or inflamed areas or areas.
  • Petrissage: Lifting, kneading, skin rolling, muscle rolling and wringing. These movements help with circulation, which stimulates cell regeneration, and aid in loosening tense muscles.
  • Tapotement: Tapping, plucking, cupping and pounding. Tapotement movements can help improve blood circulation and cell rejuvenation, and also relax and release tight muscles.
  • Vibration: Rocking, shaking and trembling movements. These motions can help muscles release.

Focus On The Bodys Lymphatic System

Healing Massage Retreat

Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle massage that focuses not on the muscular system but on the bodys lymphatic system. This specialized massage does not involve muscle or soft tissue manipulation it is done very lightly to engage the lymphatic system which moves within the layers of our skin. The lymphatic system is a critical circulatory system that helps remove waste and toxins from the bodys tissues. A series of vessels and lymph nodes circulate lymphatic fluids throughout the body, clearing and removing cellular waste.

This is a very light modality that is tied in with your immune system. In fact, it is the highway that most of your immune cells use throughout your body.

Getting lymph drainage can clear your system of wastes and toxins that build up in the cells. It also helps to circulate immune cells to areas under attack, or in need of repair. This can increase your resistance to minor illnesses and speed recovery time after an illness or injury.

People that I would recommend this for are those who are recovering from surgery, illness, or clients who wish to increase overall health and wellness.

This modality is can also be used to help with lymphedema, especially after cancer treatments. If you have already experienced lymphedema then you need to seek out someone with extensive Lymph Drainage training. I suggest looking on AMTAs website for a practitioner as this is beyond our level of training.

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a swelling of a body part, most often an extremity, resulting from an accumulation of fluids, in such proportions as to be palpable and visible. Lymphedema occurs when the lymph vascular system is not able to fill its functions of resorption and transport of the protein and lymph load. Lymphedema occurs whenever lymphatic vessels are absent, underdeveloped, obstructed or damaged.

What is the Treatment for Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a serious condition, indicating that the lymph system is unable to handle the lymph load. Treatment should begin as soon as lymphedema is diagnosed. The goal of treatment is to reduce the swelling and facilitate the flow of lymph fluid to the venous circulation of the affected area. The most effective approach used by Therapists in many European Countries is a method called Combined Decongestive Therapy , a four step process, carried out over a four week period. The individual elements are Manual Lymph Drainage, compression therapy, remedial exercises, breathing techniques and excellent skin hygiene. The patient visits the Clinic once or twice a day, 5 times per week, or in accordance with the Physicians recommendations.

Why Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Some health conditions interrupt the normal flow of lymph, causing lymph fluid to build up in a particular area of the body, often in the arms or legs, where it can cause swelling or lymphedema. Lymphatic problems can be caused by infections, cancer treatments that involve the removal of lymph nodes, or any condition that damages the lymphatic system. Lymphatic massage can reduce swelling and improve circulation throughout the lymphatic system.

Benefits Of Lymphatic Massage

Most notably, lymphatic massage is great for those recovering from surgery, as it helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. Rejuvenating the lymphatic system can also have additional benefits which include helping with cellulite, sinus congestion and migraines. Patients also report feeling less bloated after their lymphatic massage treatment as its a great treatment to assist with digestive problems, or tension in the gut. Lastly, it helps to decrease water retention caused by too much toxicity in the body

Who/ Post Liposuction Guidelines

Those who are suffering from lymphedema, fibromyalgia, or other conditions of the lymphatic system as well as those who have had lymph nodes removed and experience periodic pooling or swelling in particular areas of the body.

Liposuction recovery guidelines:

Generally there is a 2 week recovery period post-procedure. During this time the client will meet w/the doctors and trained medical staff to manually drain the fluid from the incisions.

After the 2 week period the client is urged to seek out regular appointments with a massage therapist. At this time the drains will be removed and the clients body will be relearning how to drain internally. The therapist will assist by using light slow movements to encourage the fluid to drain into the lymph nodes which will lead to the liver and kidneys. This decreases pressure and inflammation that can make recovery uncomfortable.

For those new to this I recommend a 45 minute appointment to start. That gives us time to do a little work without overwhelming the body. It also gives the therapist enough time to assess where the body is in the healing process and how much support it will need going forward. For some, getting treatment several times a week may be recommended. For others, one session a week or even every 2 weeks may be sufficient. There is no 1 size fits all situation, each persons body recovers differently, even if your surgery was short.

Swedish massage is the style that comes to mind when most people think about massage. It was developed in Stockholm two centuries ago and is the most common and best-known type of bodywork performed today. The goal of Swedish massage is relaxation of the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Additional techniques include: Circular pressure applied by the hands and palms firm kneading percussion-like tapping bending and stretching. Lotion is often used to reduce friction and stimulate the skin. Swedish massage is an exceptional treatment for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation, enhancing flexibility, and easing tension.

What To Expect During A Dry Brushing Massage

During your dry brushing session, your massage therapist will use the brush in the palm of their hand to do circular motions along the whole body, typically starting with the feet and working their way up to your entire body. The brush works up the body in the direction of the heart. This is because of how the lymph system drains, towards the center of the body.

The brush is run over each body part typically around 10 times in a circular, clockwise motion before moving on to a different area.

Your skin might be lightly pink after your treatment. This is normal. The strokes should be smooth and soft. Your massage therapist will watch how your skin reacts to pressure to see if it needs to be lighter or deeper. If you ever feel like it is too rough, let your massage therapist know and they will adjust.

Recovery From Lymphatic Massage Treatment

No recovery time and no special care are required after Lymphatic Massage treatments. Most patients experience no post-treatment discomfort. If you do, however, an ice pack should relieve it. We recommend that you engage in light activity after your lymphatic massage and drink a lot of water to move out the remainder of the waste materials.

Whats The Best Way To Set Up A Consultation Or An Appointment With A Massage Therapist During The Covid

Ask your massage therapist if they offer consultations over a video chat or phone call. If they do, ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. For example, ask what precautions they’re taking to keep both parties safe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might also want to ask if they offer gift cards that can be used at a later time, remote services or even virtual lessons for you or members in your household.

Also, ask how they plan to handle payments, and whether you can pay through an online or digital method instead of with physical cash or credit cards.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage is a pleasant, gentle, and non-invasive massage designed to improve the appearance of the skin by facilitating proper lymphatic flow and drainage.

It is often used as an anti-aging procedure, as proper lymphatic drainage results in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. However, it is also used as an effective treatment for a number of skin maladies, such as acne, cellulite and rosacea.

The lymphatic system, as part of the immune system, has a number of functions: to remove excess fluid from body tissues to absorb fats and to protect the body against disease. The processes of the lymphatic system may slow down for a variety of reasons, such as autoimmune disorders, environmental conditions, lifestyle choices, and injuries.

Manual lymphatic drainage encourages the movement of the lymphatic system, which reduces swelling and puffiness, induces relaxation, and improves the skins tone and texture.

Manual lymphatic drainage was originally developed by Emil and Estrid Vodder, both physical therapists in the 1930s. After finding that many of their patients with chronic colds also had swollen lymph nodes, they began researching the lymphatic system and found that a light, rhythmic massage with stretching movements was effective at stimulating the lymph flow throughout the body. By 1936, their technique had gained recognition in the medical community, and they subsequently presented their findings to a health and beauty committee in Paris.

Lymphatic Drainage And Applied Kinesiology

A persons lymph system is perhaps the most overlooked and least understood part of the body. Comprising the bodys interstitial fluids many of the bodys waste products and the short chain fatty acids are deposited there. By some accounts it becomes the trash can of the body. The lymph system is one of the three ways the body rids itself of metabolic waste. The other two being the bowel and the lung / urinary system, the latter of which is seen as a closed system by itself. The lymph system is also large as a person has 4 times as much lymph as they do blood.

However, few health practitioners evaluate it as part of their exam except for applied kinesiologists and some chiropractors. This is rather odd as a person can be admitted to a hospital for a major surgery. The patient can be assigned a team of specialists from the surgeon to the cardiologist but no one takes into account the importance of the lymph and its role in the healing process. In everyday life the chief offender which can affect the lymph is the partial hydrogenated oils which are common in the American diet. These are almost incapable of being processed by the bodys liver and inevitable end in the lymph system in the form of cellulite. Cellulite can have a half in the body of up to six months.
