Rail Crossing Claims Three More Lives

Less than a year after a trucker was killed at the same spot, three school-bound teenagers died instantly yesterday when a westbound Via Rail-Amtrak passenger train sliced their car in half at a level crossing west of Toronto.

The crossing has flashing lights and bells, but no barriers.

There were conflicting reports about whether the lights and bells were working when yesterday’s tragedy occurred.

“People are going to be upset, really angry, no doubt about it. I’m angry,” said Halton Hills Mayor Marilyn Serjeantson, who lobbied hard for crossing gates to be installed after November’s accident, which was identical to yesterday’s collision in location, timing and the route of the train.

“Enough is enough. Get some gates up here.”

A report by the federal Transportation Safety Board was commissioned after last year’s accident, in which 22-year-old gravel-truck operator Brett Wade died.

“That report has not yet been finalized,” safety board investigator Garrit Roosenboom said at the scene of yesterday’s tragedy.

Residents of the hamlet of Limehouse, Ont., where the accidents happened between Acton and Georgetown, were not reassured.

“There have been other close calls,” said Heather Crider, who lives three houses away from the crossing and heard a bang and then silence when the train slammed into the teens’ Volkswagen Jetta shortly before 8 a.m.

After Cheryl left this place has gone down hill. We do not like the new salon manager because she is very rude and unprofessional. We have been members for close to 5 years and will be canceling shortly because of the the new manager. Besides- all of the good therapist end up leaving massage envy bc they don’t like the work environment. Customer service is everything in this competitive market- there’s a million places to go and get a massage and better customer service.
